Actor R Madhavan talks about his famous film ‘Rehnaa Hai Tere Dil Mein’ at IFFI

At the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, where his film “Hisaab Barabar” is making its debut, actor R Madhavan spoke candidly about his classic film “Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein,” which was re-released in August of this year to commemorate its 25th anniversary.

‘Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein’, which was produced by Vashu Bhagnani’s Pooja Entertainment, also featured Dia Mirza and Saif Ali Khan. Madhavan and Dia made their Bollywood debuts with the movie.

Madhavan told ANI that he was “heartbroken” by the film’s first box office failure but grateful that it went on to become a classic. The actor said that it feels great that the movie was re-released 25 years later and made more money than it did when it first came out.

It wasn’t a success when it was initially launched. Thus, I recall experiencing heartbreak. It was devastating, even though I had visited every temple and made sure I had done all possible to produce the movie the way it should have been. I had no idea that destiny and fortune had a tremendous narrative in store for me. After 25 years, it was (re)released and fared better financially. Being acknowledged for directing a movie twenty-five years later is fantastic,” Madhavan said.

2001 saw the release of “Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein.” The love drama was a remake of Gautham Vasudev Menon’s original Tamil film “Minnale,” which came out the same year. Online rumors circulated a few years ago that the movie’s creators were considering a sequel. Madhavan denied rumors of a RHTDM sequel in 2020. The public still enjoys the movie’s songs, such as Sach Keh Raha Hai, Dil Ko Tumse, and Zara Zara.

Additionally, the ‘Shaitaan’ actor revealed an intriguing fact about his films: anytime he portrayed “romance on the train,” they did very well.

“The movies have always done incredibly well when I’ve done romance on the train. From Tanu Weds Manu to Alai Payuthey, my first movie with Mani Ratnam, the original Saathiya, the movie has done well for us wherever there were trains,” he said.

Over 180 foreign films from 81 nations are on display at IFFI 2024, which started on November 20. Of them, 16 are world debuts, 3 are international premieres, 43 are Asian premieres, and 109 are Indian premieres.

Notably, the organizers have also included a tribute program to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of four Indian cinema icons: musician Mohammed Rafi, Telugu film star Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR), director Tapan Sinha, and actor-filmmaker Raj Kapoor.
The International Film Festival of India’s (IFFI) 55th edition will conclude on November 28.
