Actor Mohanlal praised as director for his film ‘Barroz 3D – Guardian of Treasure’
In the newly released fantasy adventure film “Barroz 3D – Guardian of Treasure,” veteran actor Mohanlal has received praise for both his acting and directing abilities.
The film, which combines 3D graphics with an engrossing children’s story, is his directorial debut and offers a novel cinematic experience to the Indian film industry.
Mohanlal spoke about his experience behind the camera, the difficulties of directing a 3D movie, and what makes “Barroz 3D” a ground-breaking endeavor for Indian cinema in an interview with ANI.
Mohanlal, who has an impressive playing career that has lasted more than 40 years, described the idea behind his first film as a director.
Fantasy adventure movies, like “Barroz 3D,” are not often seen in Indian cinema, particularly in 3D.
“It’s a fantasy adventure film,” Mohanlal said. The fact that this is the first 3D movie in 40 years makes it unique. Combining technological know-how, creative vision, and a few subtle psychological aspects is necessary to make a 3D film come to life. It was thrilling and difficult at the same time. The crew that made this voyage possible was very skilled.
There were particular difficulties in using 3D technology itself. Depth and visual effects have to be carefully considered while filming in 3D, particularly for a narrative with magical aspects.
“We shot this film with two cameras, and capturing the right depth was quite difficult, as too much depth or excessive 3D effects can cause headaches and nausea,” he said.
Mohanlal also gave much thought to the process of making ‘Barroz 3D’ a reality. Although he wasn’t interested in directing at first, the chance presented itself without warning.
“It just occurred. I didn’t really like it. This is a family-friendly film that you may enjoy with your kids. I was moved when I first heard the tale. “We had the opportunity to make the movie,” he said.
Based on the book “Barroz: Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure” by Jijo Punnoose, the movie was initially supposed to be directed by a different person.
“The tale belonged to Mr. Jijo, but he wasn’t prepared to lead it himself. He wanted to helm a more ambitious movie. I took over at that point,” Mohanlal said.
Since no other filmmaker was prepared to embark on this 3D picture, I believe I have been selected. I consider myself fortunate to have contributed to this picture, which was a team effort driven by enthusiasm and inventiveness. This movie is a gift to the viewer, in my opinion. The ‘Drishyam’ actor said, “I felt it was time to give something back to the people who have supported me this long after 47 years in the industry.”
The film’s inventive approach is also evident in its production, which uses state-of-the-art technology and worldwide cooperation.
He said that the film gives spectators another unique experience with its underwater animated song scene.
The team had to balance keeping the 3D experience while making sure that the viewers wouldn’t feel uncomfortable due to the fast-paced action and quick camera movements.
“You must create an experience that feels real to the viewer, even in a fantastical setting,” Mohanlal said.
On December 11, Bollywood star Akshay Kumar unveiled the much awaited teaser for “Barroz 3D” in Hindi during the film’s Mumbai premiere.
Akshay, who has previously worked with Mohanlal on Hindi versions of popular Malayalam films, commended the film’s distinct charm.
“Even though we’ve watched a lot of 3D movies, this one stands out since it was made totally in 3D. It is a children’s movie, and in India, there aren’t many films directed at children. “I have no doubt that it will make many kids happy,” he remarked.
A fascinating look into the world of Barroz, where the past and present collide, is provided by the trailer.
Thanks to breathtaking 3D effects and an engrossing plot, the movie, which is centered on friendship, loyalty, and lifting old curses, promises to be a visual extravaganza.
‘Barroz 3D’, which was produced by Antony Perumbavoor under the Aashirvad Cinemas brand, was released globally on December 25, 2024.
With the help of a superb ensemble that includes Maya, Cesar Lorente Raton, Ignacio Mateos, Komal Sharma, Guru Somasundaram, and Tuhin Menon, Mohanlal plays the title character in the movie.
Fans of Mohanlal are also excitedly anticipating L2: Empuraan, the follow-up to the 2019 smash hit “Lucifer.”
Filming is over, and the movie—Prithviraj Sukumaran’s third directing endeavor—will be released on March 27, 2025.
