AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh filed a business suspension notice in Rajya Sabha under Rule 267
New Delhi: In an attempt to address the worsening law and order situation over the “increasing crimes” in the nation’s capital, Rajya MP for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Sanjay Singh, submitted a Suspension of Business notice in the Rajya Sabha on Monday under rule 267.
“I would like to draw your attention to the increasing crimes in the country’s capital,” Sanjay Singh stated in the resolution submitted to the secretary general of the Rajya Sabha. Delhi is home to the prime minister, the foreign affairs minister, diplomats, and members of both houses of Parliament. The capital of the nation is now the epicenter of criminal activity.
Earlier on November 29, Singh had also submitted a Suspension of Business Notice in an attempt to address the rising crime rate in the nation’s capital.
Singh said in the notice he filed that “statistics from prominent newspapers,” which show a rise in crimes such as robberies, attempted murders, and crimes against women and the elderly, had grown.
“The concerning state of crime in the capital is highlighted by statistics from 2024’s top publications. According to Singh’s notice, the number of robbery cases has climbed by 23 percent, theft cases by 25.2 percent, and attempted murders by 18 percent.
The letter further said that Delhi leads other metro areas in crimes against women. This demonstrates the shortcomings in the way law and order operate.
“There is significant worry about the rise in crimes against women and the elderly, as well as the 878 fatal traffic accidents. Gang battles on the streets and instances of unlawful extortion from shopkeepers have Delhi in a frenzy,” Singh said.
It is a “failure of the security system,” he said, when bomb threats continue to exist in the nation’s capital.
The inadequacy of the security system is shown by the recent bomb threats in Delhi in 2024, which have exposed bold criminals who do not fear the ministry’s laws and want to carry out this activity from the nation’s Parliament to AIIMS,” Singh added.
Additionally, he said that over 1 lakh 70 thousand offenses had been reported to Delhi Police in the previous year.
The Delhi police have recorded 174,253 crimes, including 308 murders, 1,034 robberies, 5,735 home thefts, and 25,140 car thefts. The investigation rate for home theft (26 percent) and other crimes is quite low, he noted, despite an increase in organized crime cases.
In the notification, he further said, “This makes it clear that the existing measures have failed to ensure public safety.”
On November 29, AAP members of Parliament protested on Parliament grounds, claiming that the state of law and order in the nation’s capital was becoming worse.
AAP leaders Sandeep Pathak, Raghav Chadha, and Sanjay Singh participated in the demonstration along with other party leaders.
On November 28, there was a reported explosion in Prashant Vihar, Delhi. Teams from the Delhi Police Crime Branch, Special Cell, Bomb Disposal Squad, and other National Security Guard (NSG) commandos hurried to the scene with fire engines.
Following the explosion, a high alert was issued in the nation’s capital.
Comparing the state of law and order in the capital to Mumbai in the 1990s, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi unleashed a scathing attack on the BJP-led national government.
“Delhi has become like 90s Mumbai, a time when it was dominated by the underworld, as we saw in TV shows and films,” Atishi said.
