New Delhi: On Friday, a sizable crowd gathered outside Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s Shalimar Bagh home to welcome her. To congratulate her, people arrived with flower bouquets and garlands. At a lavish ceremony held at Ramlila Maidan on Thursday, Rekha Gupta was sworn in as the ninth chief minister of Delhi.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is the fourth female chief minister in the nation’s capital and the second female BJP chief minister in Delhi.
Rekha Gupta and her council of ministers were sworn in by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena.
An oath of office was also taken by six additional ministers: Parvesh Verma, Ashish Sood, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Ravinder Indraj Singh, Kapil Mishra, and Pankaj Kumar Singh.
Rekha Gupta, who was elected from the Shalimar Bagh seat, has been a member of the national executive committee of the BJP Mahila Morcha and its general secretary in Delhi. In these capacities, she spearheaded a number of efforts to improve the lives of women and marginalized populations.
Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a student organization connected to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), was where Rekha Gupta began her political career. She attended Daulat Ram College at Delhi University and was involved in advocating for student problems while serving as President of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) from 1996 to 1997. In 2007, while serving as a councilor from North Pitampura, she pushed to build parks and libraries, among other essential community services. She founded the non-profit organization AAS and has also worked toward an LLB.
In 2023, Shelly Oberoi of the AAP defeated her in the mayoral race. The Delhi BJP reportedly wanted a woman politician to take the position, which is why Rekha Gupta, a 50-year-old first-time MLA, was chosen over more experienced leaders. In contrast to several other Delhi BJP leaders, she is renowned for maintaining a low profile.
After days of heated speculation about the potential pick, her name was revealed as the new chief minister of Delhi.
On February 8, the Delhi assembly election results were announced. Rekha Gupta’s promotion will assist the BJP in highlighting its qualifications among women, since the party places a strong focus on women’s empowerment. She will be the only female chief minister in the current BJP.
