38 candidates filed their nomination papers for five assembly constituencies in Assam
Kamrup: For the five assembly seats in Assam that will be up for contention in the by-elections, 38 candidates have submitted their nomination papers.
On November 13, there will be by-elections for the five Assamese assembly seats of Behali, Dholai, Samaguri, Bongaigaon, and Sidli.
24 candidates submitted their nomination papers for the five assembly seats on Friday, the last day of the nomination paper filing period.
The Chief Electoral Officer of Assam reports that on Friday, three candidates submitted their nominations for the assembly seat of Behali, one for Sidli, five for Bongaigaon, twelve for Samaguri, and three for Dholai.
There are now 38 contenders who have submitted nominations in total thanks to this.
Three assembly seats—Behali, Samaguri, and Dholai—have been contested by the governing BJP, while Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), two of its allies, are running in Bongaigaon and Sidli, respectively.
Candidates from the Congress have run for each of the five seats.
While Dhrubajyoti Purakayastha would run from the Dholai seat, Tanzil Hussain, the son of former Assam Minister and Lok Sabha MP Rakibul Hussain, will run as the Congress candidate from Samaguri.
Congress has also nominated Brajenjit Sinha from Bongaigaon and Sanjib Warle from Sidli.
Jayanta Borah, a former BJP politician, has been selected by the party to represent Behali in Assam.
Diptimoyee Choudhury, the wife of Lok Sabha MP Phani Bhushan Choudhury, has been nominated the party’s candidate for the Bongaigaon seat in the Assam by-election by the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), an ally of the Bharatiya Janta Party-led Assam government.
The AGP put forward Diptimoyee Choudhury as their party candidate for the seat in face of resistance from several party officials and employees.
Nirmal Kumar Brahma has been put up by the United People’s Party Liberal, another BJP partner, as their party’s candidate for the Sidli seat by-election.
Candidates for the Behali, Dholai, and Samaguri seats have been announced by the Bharatiya Janta Party. The BJP has selected Diganta Ghatowar as its party candidate in Behali, while Nihar Ranjan Das will run from Dholai and Diplu Ranjan Sarma will run from Samaguri.
