Heavy rain wreaks havoc in Odisha, IMD issues red alert in these districts, see 5 big updates here
Odisha Weather: The state of the floods in the southern portion of Odisha, namely in Koraput and Malkangiri, has worsened as a result of the state’s deep depression and continuous heavy rains.
The Top Five Updates Are As Follows
1. As the flooding in southern Odisha worsens, over 1,700 people have been evacuated from low-lying districts and sent to several shelter centers. The Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) reports that 560 villages in the districts of Koraput and Malkangiri are impacted. Following consultations with Minister of Revenue and Disaster Management Suresh Pujhari, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has assigned three top officials to carefully monitor and handle the growing problem in reaction to the severe rains.
2. In charge of monitoring and supporting the district administration in Malkangiri are Sundhansu Sarangi, Director General of Police (Fire Services); Bishnupada Sethi, Secretary of the Social Security & Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Department; and Charan Meena, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Southern Division).
3. The SRC office reports that three blocks—Malkangiri, Chitrakonda, and Khairput—recorded more than 200 mm of rainfall, with Malkangiri Block recording the greatest rainfall of 253 mm.
4. More than 100 mm of rain fell on six blocks in the districts of Kotaput and Malkangiri. In Malkangiri, water spilled over every bridge that connected Pangam and Motu Road. Two ODRAF teams participated in the rescue effort, and six teams of the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) were stationed in Malkangiri. In the Malkangiri region of Poteru, more than sixty villagers—two of them farmers—were saved, while several were left trapped on the roof.
5. Due to forecasts of severe to very heavy rainfall in numerous regions and very high rainfall in isolated spots, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red warning for a number of districts, including Ganjam, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khordha, Bolangir, Boudh, Koraput, Nabarangapur, and Puri.
