Following a demonstration by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) on May 3 of last year in protest of the Manipur High Court’s order to examine adding the Meitei community to the Scheduled Tribes list, violence broke out between the Kuki and Meitei tribes in Manipur.
Since May, violence has engulfed the whole state, and in order to maintain order, the federal government has to send in paramilitary troops.
