BJP’s Ram Shinde filed his nomination for the post of council president today
Ram Shinde, a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council for the Bharatiya Janata Party, submitted his candidacy on Wednesday to be the Council’s chairperson.
On December 19, there will be an election to fill the position of Chairperson.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar were present when the MLC submitted his nomination.
At Vidhan Bhavan in Nagpur were Ministers Jaykumar Rawal, Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Chandrakant Dada Patil, and Uday Samant.
On X, the Maharashtra chief minister’s official account announced the nomination and included the leaders in attendance praising Shinde.

According to Ram Shinde’s own account, he had already thanked state and national party officials for considering him for the position.
“I sincerely thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Home Minister of the country, Amit Shah, the National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party, J P Nadda Ji, the Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, BJP State President Chandrashekhar Bawankule as well as all the leaders of NDA and Mahayuti,” Shinde wrote in a post on X.
Since the tenure of Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar expired in 2022, the position of chairman has remained unfilled. Since then, Neelam Gorhe of the Shiv Sena has assumed extra responsibility for the formal tasks as acting chairwoman.
Rahul Narwekar was elected Speaker of the Legislative Assembly without any opposition earlier on December 9. The BJP will have both posts with them if Shinde wins this election.
Shiv Sena, led by Eknath Shinde, reportedly requested certain key posts, but as the BJP holds the most seats in the council, they have chosen a member of their own party.
Shinde was previously elected to the state legislature in 2014 from the Karjat Jamkhed seat. The Nationalist Congress Party-Sharadchandra Pawar (NCP-SP) leader and Sharad Pawar’s grandson, Rohit Pawar, beat him in 2019.
There are now 26 open seats in the Council out of a total of 78 members. With the assistance of three independents, Mahayuti’s total number of members is 35, including 19 from the BJP, 7 from the NCP (Ajit Pawar), and 6 from the Shinde Sena.
With seven members from the Shiv Sena (UBT), seven from the Congress, and three from the NCP (SP), Maha Vikas Agadhi has a total of seventeen members.
