The Vanuatu Islands, which are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, are vulnerable to earthquakes, according to the United Nations specialized agency International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

Compared to most other Pacific Island nations, Vanuatu is comparatively higher and has a large number of volcanically formed islands. The IFAD pointed out that Vanuatu, like other small island developing nations, is very vulnerable to climate change, natural catastrophes, and global shocks, and has little ability to adapt or recover.

Since the UN’s World Risk Index was introduced in 2011, Vanuatu’s vulnerability has continuously placed it as the world’s most vulnerable nation.
