Ustad Zakir Hussain Died: On Sunday, December 15, renowned tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain departed from this life. For the last two weeks, the renowned singer had been in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a hospital in San Francisco, undergoing treatment for heart-related issues.
It was determined that idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a persistent lung condition, was the cause of death. Prospect PR’s Jon Bleicher verified the news on behalf of the family.
With accolades and condolences flooding in from the film industry, the Padma Vibhushan awardee’s passing has left the music business and his innumerable fans in deep sorrow.
Producer and filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar sent his sympathies to Padma Vibhushan Zakir Hussain’s family.
The ‘Page 3’ filmmaker posted on his X account, saying, “I’m saddened to learn of the loss of Padma Vibhushan #ZakirHussain sir, the famous tabla master. He became well-known because of his amazing skill, which brought Indian classical music to a global audience. His family, as well as the millions of supporters, have my deepest sympathies. #OmShanti.
Shamir Tandon, a music composer, thanked Ustad Zakir Hussain for using his tabla to introduce India to the world of music.
When Shamir Tandon posted a stunning photo of Zakir Hussain performing on Instagram, he remarked,
“Many decades ago, Zakir bhai’s tabla bols placed us on the international music scene.
Youtifying the instrument and making Indian classical music hip are two incredible contributions to art and culture. Zakir bhai, rest in peace. I appreciate all you’ve done. Thank you.
Bollywood star Ranveer Singh shared a picture of the tabla master with a red heart and folded hands emoji in remembrance of him.

The famous tabla player Ustad Alla Rakha was the father of Zakir Hussain, who was born in Mumbai, India, on March 9, 1951. He showed a great affinity for the tabla at an early age and soon became well-known for his extraordinary aptitude.
Zakir started playing with some of the best Indian classical musicians by the time he was a teenager.
Ustad Zakir Hussain worked with some of the most well-known figures in the traditional Indian and international music sectors throughout his career. He collaborated with icons like Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Vilayat Khan and played a significant role in the formation of global fusion bands like Planet Drum, with Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead, and Shakti, featuring guitarist John McLaughlin.
He also received a Grammy Award for his work on the Planet Drum CD.
