Kerala opposition MPs including Priyanka Gandhi protest at Makar Dwar for landslide-hit Wayanad
Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other opposition MPs from Kerala protested at the Makar Dwar of Parliament, calling for a relief package for Wayanad, which has been devastated by landslides.
A number of people were seen carrying banners that said “Justice for Wayanad,” including CPI(M) MP John Brittas, Congress General Secretary and party MP KC Venugopal, and Priyanka Gandhi. “Give Wayanad a relief package” and “Wayanad ko nyay do, bedbav na karein” (Justice for Wayanad, no prejudice should exist).
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, a Wayanad MP and Congress politician, told reporters during the demonstration that there should be “no discrimination” during natural calamities and that the federal government is not offering Wayanad a special package.
“Wayanad will not get a special gift from the government. We have written to the Prime Minister and asked the Home Minister. Similar widespread destruction has also occurred in Himachal Pradesh, where the Congress party is in power. In all instances, the Central government is denying the victims their just compensation owing to political reasons, despite their requests for assistance from the Center. They are Indian citizens. The Wayanad MP said that prejudice should not occur amid natural calamities.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Kerala MPs met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah earlier on December 3 and asked the Center to provide Wayanad residents who had been impacted by landslides prompt help.
Given the magnitude of the accident, Priyanka encouraged the Home Minister to give immediate consideration to providing the necessary funding to help the restoration operations.
According to the Congress leader, a sizable region had been impacted, several individuals had died, and some families had been totally destroyed.
The worst landslide in Kerala’s history struck the state on July 30, damaging many homes and other structures and killing over 300 people. The communities of Mundakkai and Chooralmala were impacted.
Before personally visiting the site of the catastrophe to assess relief and rehabilitation work in the area, PM Modi conducted an aerial reconnaissance of the landslide-affected regions during his visit to Wayanad.
