Trade, visa regulations, connectivity, border murders, water sharing, and other topics of shared interest are among the main topics on the agenda, according to Daily Star Bangladesh.

Since Muhammad Yunus’ interim administration took power in Bangladesh, this visit represents the first high-level interaction between the two countries. A wide variety of topics will be covered in the talks, such as the imprisonment of spiritual teacher Chinmoy Krishna Das and recent instances of violence against minorities.

The Chief Advisor of Bangladesh’s Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam, earlier on December 4 affirmed that the topics of these discussions will be of shared interest.

“We were looking forward to the meeting of the visit of the Indian Foreign Secretary, the both Foreign Secretaries are going to talk issues of mutual interest and we hope these meetings are going to help deepen ties between the two neighbours,” Alam said the press.

He said, “We think that our relations with India remain okay and we are trying to improve our relationship,” when questioned about the country’s relations with India. Both nations are working to strengthen their ties, and we anticipate that things will improve significantly in the days and months ahead.”

In the meanwhile, increasing violence against minority groups continues to be a serious issue. The Hindu temple known as the Mahabhagya Lakshminarayan Mandir, located in Dhor hamlet close to Dhaka, was purportedly set on fire on December 6. The superintendent of the temple, Babul Ghosh, complained about unnamed attackers, claiming that they had doused the statues with fuel before running away.

He said that there were probably more than just vandalism behind the incident. On suspicion of sedition, spiritual guru Chinmoy Krishna Das was arrested on November 25 and is still being held. The government of Bangladesh has been requested by the Ministry of External Affairs to guarantee the protection of his legal rights and the openness of his trial. January 2, 2025 is the date of his case’s next hearing.

On the fringes of the UN General Assembly in New York in September, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with Bangladesh’s Foreign Advisor Md. Touhid Hossain.

In order to promote bilateral collaboration, the two parties had decided to keep up a “good working relationship” and have frequent Foreign Office Consultation sessions.
