Special session of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly postponed till December 8
The extraordinary session of the Maharashtra Assembly, which started on Saturday, has been postponed till December 8.
Before the assembly was adjourned today, 173 newly elected MLAs took the oath of office.
MLAs Abu Azmi and Raees Sheikh of the Samajwadi Party (SP) took the oath of office today in defiance of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance’s protests.
The remaining 115 MLAs, the majority of whom are opposition members, have not yet taken their oaths.
This comes after Aaditya Thackeray, the leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), said that the party’s elected MLAs will not take the oath of office on Saturday during the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly’s current special session.
The validity of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) was questioned by Thackeray.
“We have determined that the Shiv Sena UBT MLAs who won today will not take the oath of office. People would have rejoiced and celebrated if this had been the people’s mandate. But the populace did not celebrate or show the same level of excitement. “We are skeptical of EVM,” said Aaditya Thackeray.
Aaditya Thackeray, the head of the Shiv Sena UBT, and party members also honored Shivaji Maharaj in the Vidhan Bhavan complex.
Ajit Pawar, the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra and the leader of the National Congress (NCP), retaliated to Shiv Sena UBT Aaditya Thackeray’s claims that the validity of electronic voting machines (EVMs) by saying that the opposition should take their issues to the Election Commission or the courts.
“Making such accusations here is pointless. The freshly sworn-in MLA Ajit Pawar said, “They (the opposition) should go to the Election Commission and if they do not get justice there, they should approach the court.”
On Saturday, Devendra Fadnavis, the chief minister of Maharashtra, and Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, the deputy chief ministers, were sworn in as members of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.
On the first day of the Maharashtra Assembly special session, CM Fadnavis and DCMs Shinde and Pawar honored Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj early this morning at the Vidhan Bhavan complex in Mumbai before taking the oath of office.
One day before the Assembly’s three-day extraordinary session begins, Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan swore in senior BJP MLA Kalidas Sulochana Kolambkar as the pro-tem Speaker of the Assembly on Friday.
In a ceremony conducted in Mumbai on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a number of alliance leaders, and celebrities from various industries joined Devendra Fadnavis as he took the oath of office as Maharashtra Chief Minister for the third time. During the event, Deputy Chief Ministers Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde also took an oath of office.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Mahayuti coalition won a resounding victory with 235 seats in the Maharashtra Assembly Election 2024. With 132 seats, the BJP became the single-largest party, marking a major turning point in the election.
With 57 and 41 seats, respectively, the Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party also saw significant increases.
With just 16 seats won by the Congress, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) suffered a significant defeat. The NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) only managed 10 seats, while its coalition partner, Shiv Sena (UBT), took home 20 seats.
