Escalating tensions in Syria leave 370,000 people displaced
At least 370,000 men, women, and children, boys, and girls have been displaced since the escalation of hostilities in Syria, according to estimates from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Of them, 100,000 have fled their homes more than once.
The majority of the displaced are women and children, according to Stephane Dujarric, the Secretary-General’s spokesperson, who made this statement at his regular press conference. “Tens of thousands of people have now arrived in north-east Syria.”
Between 60,000 and 80,000 people have been recently relocated, according to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working in the northeast, with over 25,000 of them now staying in shelters.
As soon as they are allotted, these shelters start to fill up. As winter approaches, many are sleeping in their vehicles or on the streets in below-freezing weather since these places are already full.
In order to determine the needs of families who have arrived at receiving centers, the UN is collaborating with its humanitarian partners in the northeast.
