Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council has condemned the attacks on Hindus
Dhaka: The biggest minority group in Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, issued a statement on Thursday denouncing assaults on Hindus in the eastern Sunamgonj region.
The press release titled “Unity Parishad strongly protested the attack on hundreds of minority houses in Sunamganj’s Manglargaon” stated that on the evening of December 3, 2024, over 100 Hindu-owned homes and businesses were looted, vandalized, and attacked in Manglargaon and Monigaon East Gunigram of Sunamganj’s Doarabazar neighborhoods.
The assault caused significant damage to the Doara Bazar Loknath Temple. At least 15 lakh taka has been lost. The assault also caused significant damage to the home and family temple of Guru De, the president of the Upazila Puja Udjakar Parishad in the area. The local minority peasants are very terrified about this tragedy. Fearful, many have fled to other places, notably Sylhet.
According to a news release, “The attack was carried out by the communal miscreants for several hours against the local Hindus after accusing Akash Das, the 20-year-old son of Prafulla Das of Manglargaon village, who had already been arrested for insulting religion on his Facebook post” .
“Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Oikya Parishad strongly condemns and protests such communal attacks and immediately arrests the attackers, compensates and rehabilitates the victims and the attackers,” a news release said.
“It has strongly demanded from the government to ensure exemplary punishment,” the statement said.
Violence against minority populations and the imprisonment of spiritual leader Chinmoy Krishna Das on sedition charges have occurred in Bangladesh.
India has already voiced serious concerns over Chinmoy Krishna Das’s detention and refusal of bail. Das is also the spokesman for the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatan Jagran Jote.
