The man who tried to shoot Sukhbir Singh Badal was sent to three-day police custody by an Amritsar court
An Amritsar court has placed Narain Singh Chaura under three days of police detention for his Wednesday attempt to shoot former Deputy Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Sukhbir Singh Badal at Golden Temple in Amritsar, according to police.
Chaura was brought before the court on Thursday, and after the hearing of both sides’ arguments, the judge granted him three days of detention, according to DSP Rashpal Singh.
“The judge granted a three-day detention when we brought Narain Singh Chaura before the court. We had requested additional days, but three days of detention were granted after hearing both parties’ arguments,” Singh said.
Badal was doing “seva” when Chaura tried to shoot him. But Badal was uninjured, and the assailant was swiftly subdued and taken into custody.
According to police sources, Narain Singh Chaura is a former leader of the Akal Federation and a hardline Pakistani terrorist who wrote books on guerrilla warfare and other seditious topics.
“During the early years of militancy, he was engaged in the smuggling of explosives and weapons into Punjab. According to reports, he entered Pakistan in 1984 and stayed there for a number of years before going back to Punjab. A top official said that while he was in Pakistan, he was assisting extremist groups in Punjab and maintaining remote contact with them.
In August, the Akal Takht found Badal guilty of religious misbehavior and proclaimed him a ‘tankhaiya’. He was then performing’seva’. Akal Takht said that he would be punished for the “mistakes” and “decisions” made by the state’s SAD-led administration between 2007 and 2017. Badal was seen cleaning utensils in the Takhat Sri Kesgarh Sahib, Gurdwara, as part of his penance. He performed Seva with his family members as well.
Sukhbir Singh Badal, meanwhile, gave a “seva” performance at Takhat Sri Kesgarh Sahib in Anandpur Sahib on Thursday.
Shiromani Akali Dal General Secretary Bikram Singh Majithia chastised Punjab Police SP for shaking hands with attacker Narain Singh Chaura on CCTV after the incident.
“By God’s grace, Sukhbir Singh Badal is still alive today,” said SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia.I published a video yesterday showing Dera Baba Nanak SP-level official Harpal Singh Randhawa shaking hands with attacker Narain Singh Chaura. Have we ever seen an ISI spy (Narayan Singh Chaura) and a police officer shaking hands? The Supreme Court or the High Court need to look into the Punjab Police’s cover-up operation.”
Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, the Amritsar Commissioner of Police, was also criticized by Majithia for implying that Badal may have planned the event himself in order to win sympathy. Bhullar was accused by Majithia of using similar statements to conceal his failure and defend his position.
