Footballer Bhaichung Bhutia condemns atrocities against minorities in Bangladesh
Kolkata: Former Indian football player Bhaichung Bhutia on Wednesday condemned the arrest of ISKCON priest Chinmoy Krishna Das and the atrocities committed against minorities in Bangladesh, saying the government of Bangladesh has to investigate the situation and provide for the country’s minority.
“The assaults on religious leaders are particularly regrettable.” The government of Bangladesh ought to investigate the situation and provide for the minorities,” Bhaichung Bhutia told ANI.
Sukanta Majumdar, a union minister and president of the West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), remarked that the events in Bangladesh are a disgrace to mankind.
“Humanity is ashamed of the events that have occurred in Bangladesh. It is a direct assault on Hinduism and Hindu people. We are unable to stop the Hindu population in Bangladesh from dropping to 8%, but the Hindus in India, particularly in Bengal, ought to take note of this. “It is now evident that Mohammad Yunus is nothing more than a puppet,” Majumdar added.
Following the arrest of a spiritual leader, Chinmoy Krishna Das, on accusations of sedition and for reportedly raising a saffron flag above Bangladesh’s national flag in Chittagong on October 25, there has been a surge in violence against minority populations in Bangladesh. The arrest came after a local legislator submitted a complaint on October 31 alleging that Chinmoy Das and others had disrespected Bangladesh’s national flag during a Hindu community event.
Chinmoy Das, a Hindu spiritual guru, will be held in prison on suspected sedition charges until January 2, 2025, according to a Bangladeshi court.
According to the Daily Star Bangladesh, the Chattogram court postponed the hearing on Chinmoy Krishna Das’ bail appeal till January 2. Due to the absence of the defense attorney, Chattogram Metropolitan Session Judge Saiful Islam rescheduled the hearing.
Mofizur Rahman, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Prosecution) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police, subsequently verified this information to Bangladeshi media.
