Air India said on X that “heavy rains and bad weather are affecting flights to and from Chennai.”

IndiGo reported that its flights in many locations, including Chennai, Tiruchirappali, Tuticorin, Madurai, and others, were affected and issued travel advice.

“The current weather conditions continue to impact flights to/from Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Tuticorin, and Madurai, with Tirupati and Vishakhapatnam now also affected,” according to the X post from IndiGo Airlines.

The effect of the cyclone is predicted to cause severe rainstorms to persist across Tamil Nadu’s north coastal districts on Saturday, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai.

Over Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Villuppuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore districts, and Puducherry, isolated heavy to very heavy rain is predicted in one or two locations today.

“Isolated locations over the districts of Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and Karaikal are likely to experience heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.” In isolated locations throughout the districts of Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Tiruchirappalli, Pudukkottai, and Karur, heavy rain is anticipated, according to a statement from the Tamil Nadu IMD.

Later in the day, Cyclone Fengal is predicted to approach the shores of north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry after moving west-northwestward across the Southwest Bay of Bengal, according to the IMD.

“It is likely to move nearly westwards and cross the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram close to Puducherry as a cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph during the evening of November 30,” the meteorological service said.

In addition to satellite observations, the IMD continually monitors Fengal using Doppler weather radars at Chennai (S Band), Sriharikota, and Chennai (X Band).
