Strong winds are blowing in Chennai due to the deep depression forming over the Bay of Bengal
Chennai: The deep depression that has been building over the Bay of Bengal is causing high tides and windy conditions in Chennai. By the morning of November 30, the depression, which is now heading northwest, is predicted to reach the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry beaches between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram, close to Puducherry, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
According to the meteorological service, when the system approaches land, it will diminish into a depression with wind gusts of up to 65 km/h and 45 to 55 km/h.
Currently situated in the Bay of Bengal, the depression is having an impact on coastal regions, especially Chennai and the surrounding districts.
The IMD is cautioning fishermen against going out to sea due to the choppy sea conditions. Along with strong winds, moderate to heavy rainfall is also anticipated in the area, particularly along Tamil Nadu and Puducherry’s coastlines.
The IMD has warned locals in the impacted regions to exercise caution and adhere to safety precautions as the depression continues to move northwest.
As the system gets closer to impact, coastal authorities have been asked to be on high alert.
Paddy fields in Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam district suffered extensive damage earlier on Thursday as a result of Cyclone Fengal’s intense rains.
Farmers are in trouble as more than 800 acres of paddy crops have been totally inundated.
Kamashwaram, Virundhamavadi, Pudupalli, Vedrappu, Vanamadevi, Vallapallam, Kallimedu, Eeravayal, and Chemboadi are among the impacted places.
A top IMD official had earlier predicted that much of the state will have pretty widespread moderate rainfall.
As Cyclone Fengal develops in the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Navy launched a comprehensive disaster response plan on Thursday.
To lessen the possible consequences of the storm, the Eastern Naval Command has launched a strong disaster response structure in cooperation with Headquarters Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Naval Area (HQTN&P).
In order to guarantee quick reaction capabilities, naval authorities are collaborating closely with state and civil administrations on search and rescue (SAR) and humanitarian aid and disaster relief (HADR) operations.
Specialized Flood Relief Teams (FRTs) are stationed in locations that are at risk, and vehicles are being stocked with necessary relief supplies, including food, drinking water, and medications.
The coastal areas of Tamil Nadu are predicted to see heavy rainfall, high gusts, and potential floods as Cyclone Fengal intensifies over the course of the next 48 hours.
Residents in low-lying and coastal regions have been asked by authorities to be alert and follow safety precautions.
