Heavy rains expected in coastal districts due to cyclonic storm in Bay of Bengal

Visakhapatnam: According to an official on Thursday, the deep depression that has been forming over the Southwest Bay of Bengal has moved north-northwestward over the last few hours and is expected to turn into a cyclonic storm that would bring rainfall to the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

Alerts have been issued across Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra Pradesh due to the deep depression that has deepened over the southwest Bay of Bengal.

Located around 550 kilometers southeast of Chennai, it is predicted to intensify into a cyclonic storm in the following 12 hours and have a major influence on the local weather in the days ahead.

Over the next few days, coastal areas in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are expected to get a lot of rain, and locals are being advised to be alert by meteorological authorities.

Because of the choppy seas, fishermen have been cautioned not to go into the Bay of Bengal.

“The deep depression over the South-West Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards during the past few hours and lay centred at 8.5 degrees north latitude and 82. 3 degrees east longitude,” S Kumar, Duty Officer, Visakhapatnam Cyclone Warning Centre, told ANI.

It is located around 370 miles southeast of Karaikal, 470 km southeast of Puducherry, and 550 km southeast of Chennai. It is expected to shift north-northwest and strengthen into a cyclonic storm during the course of the following twelve hours, the IMD official said.

It is anticipated to avoid Sri Lanka’s coastline and arrive at the Tamil Nadu shore during the course of the following two days. Over the following three days, rainfall is anticipated in the coastal Andhra Pradesh regions,” he said.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) shared the weather development on X, writing, “Deep depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal remained practically stationary during the past 6 hours at 2330 hours IST near latitude 9.0°N and longitude 82.1°E, about 100 km east-northeast of Trincomalee.”

Over the course of the following twelve hours, it is predicted to travel almost north-northwestward, avoiding the coast of Sri Lanka and strengthening into a cyclonic storm. on the morning of November 30 will traverse the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry beaches between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram as a deep depression with winds of 50–60 kmph with gusts up to 70 kmph,” it said.
