IndiGo issues travel advisory for flight disruptions due to adverse weather
Due to unfavorable weather conditions, IndiGo Airlines has issued a travel advice on flight delays to and from Chennai, Tuticorin, and Madurai.
The airline thanked customers for their forbearance and wished for a speedy recovery from the current difficulties.
“#6ETravelAdvisory: Due to adverse weather conditions, flights to/from #Chennai, #Tuticorin, and #Madurai continue to be impacted, while #Tiruchirappalli and #Salem might now also be affected,” the airline said on X.
The deep depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal has been moving almost northward at a pace of 10 kmph during the last several hours, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Around 190 km southeast of Trincomalee, 470 km southeast of Nagappattinam, 580 km south-southeast of Puducherry, and 670 km south-southeast of Chennai, it was centered over the same area as of Tuesday at 23:30 IST, close to latitude 7.5°N and longitude 82.6°E.
On Wednesday, it is most expected to keep moving north-northwest and becoming stronger, turning into a cyclonic storm. After that, during the next two days, it will keep moving north-northwest toward the Tamil Nadu coast while avoiding the Sri Lankan coast.
The depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal has already deepened into a depression, and on Wednesday, it is expected to further strengthen into a cyclonic storm, according to confirmation from the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, on Tuesday.
Since Tuesday morning, there has been a lot of rain in Chennai and its surrounding areas. Rainfall in the area is expected to be mild to moderate, with severe downpours possible until Thursday, November 28.
“The sadness from yesterday will worsen and become a severe depression… S. Balachandran, Director of the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, informed ANI that it is anticipated to strengthen further into a cyclonic storm and proceed northward, approaching the Tamil Nadu coast.
In the meanwhile, Tamil Nadu has received many weather advisories from the IMD. Due to very heavy rains in three central districts on November 26 and two districts on November 27, a red warning has been issued.
Additionally, from November 27 to 29, Chennai would be under a yellow warning due to severe rains. From November 27 to 30, nearby areas including as Chengalpet, Tiruvallur, and Kancheepuram will be under orange and yellow warnings.
There have also been reports of rainfall in Chennai’s suburbs.
On November 27, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are expected to see mild to moderate rain in numerous locations along with thunderstorms and lightning in one or two locations.
On November 28, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Tamil Nadu (several locations along the coast and a few locations in the interior) are expected to see mild to moderate rain, along with thunderstorms and lightning.
