Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma felicitated newly elected BJP MLAs
Assam: Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam and a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), congratulated the three newly elected BJP MLAs in Guwahati on Sunday after the conclusion of the assembly by-elections.
Notably, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won each of the five Assamese seats up for grabs in the by-elections. Ghatowal of the BJP won the seat in the Behali Assembly, while Nirmal Kumar Brahma of the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) took home the Sidli seat. Diptimayee Choudhury of the Asom Gana Parishad won the NDA’s seat in the Bongaigaon Assembly.
In the same vein, Nihar Ranjan Das and Diplu Ranjan Sarmah of the BJP won from Dholai and Samaguri, respectively.
In 15 states, 48 assembly seats and two Lok Sabha seats were up for grabs in the by-elections. Notable races included those in Uttar Pradesh and Wayanad, Kerala, where Congresswoman Priyanka Gandhi Vadra made her first appearance in the political process.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, earlier on Sunday unveiled the party’s plan for the state’s 2026 assembly elections.
Sarma emphasized that the BJP will concentrate on at least five Assamese seats, especially those with large numbers of votes from religious minorities.
With the tenets of justice for all and appeasement for none, we never lose sight of the minority vote. Therefore, we will keep visiting minority communities to solicit votes, but we will do so with the explicit understanding that our goal is to provide justice, not to please you. We won Karimganj; in my opinion, this was the greatest and most important outcome because, given the circumstances in Assam, it is unrealistic to expect the Assam BJP to win an MP seat when 65 percent of the population is from a religious minority. We have done the same thing in Samaguri,” he said.
“We want to run again in at least five seats in the next assembly election. My plan for where to travel and which constituency to visit has already been established. But we are unable to go across Assam. The current state of affairs is incorrect. However, I identified our target regions as North Karimganj, South Karimganj, Lahorighat, Rupahi, and Samaguri,” CM Sarma said.
However, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also gave some thought to the larger political scene in Northeast India, mentioning the recent Meghalaya election outcomes and the next Lok Sabha elections.
“I think it’s a fantastic return, especially considering how badly we lost the Lok Sabha election in Meghalaya. We have continued to run winning marathons and winning sprints in Assam, and I have no doubt that this outcome has greatly boosted the state ahead of the assembly election. because Assam’s assembly election is scheduled for April 2026. There won’t be a byelection after this. The party has benefited greatly from it,” CM Sarma said.
