Donald Trump nominates 56-year-old Lori Chavez-Deremer to lead US Department of Labor
Washington: Lori Chavez-DeRemer, 56, has been selected by President-elect Donald Trump to head the US Labor Department. “I am proud to hereby nominate Congresswoman Lori Chavez-DeRemer, from the Great State of Oregon, as United States Secretary of Labor,” Trump said in a statement.
He went on to say, “I am excited to collaborate with her in order to restore our manufacturing jobs, provide training and apprenticeship opportunities, raise salaries, and enhance working conditions for American workers. Together, we will bring about a historic partnership between labor and business that will enable working families to once again live the American Dream.
Supporting American companies had gained momentum as a result of Trump’s election campaign. He concluded with a statement: “Lori’s strong support from both the business and labor communities will ensure that the Labour Department can unite Americans of all backgrounds behind our agenda for unprecedented national success—making America richer, wealthier, Stronger and more prosperous than ever before!”
According to Trump’s announcement, Lori Chavez-DeRemer began her career in public service in 2002 as a member of the Happy Valley Parks Committee, where she contributed to the creation of the current Happy Valley Fourth of July Festival. She then became the City Council President after winning a seat on the Happy Valley City Council.
As a prospective Labor secretary, Chavez-DeRemer would establish objectives that affect workers’ pay, health, safety, and capacity to form a union, as well as employers’ rights to dismiss workers, in addition to managing the Labour Department’s personnel and budget.
According to CBS News, Chavez-DeRemer is among the few House Republicans who support the “Protecting the Right to Organize” or PRO Act, which would increase the number of workers who may organize and impose fines on businesses who infringe on workers’ rights. Additionally, the measure would diminish “right-to-work” laws that let workers in over half of the states avoid joining or contributing to unions that represent them at work.
She became the first Latina and female mayor of Happy Valley when she was elected in 2010. In 2014, she was elected again. She is one of the first Latinas and the first Republican woman elected to Congress from the state of Oregon. She was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2022 to represent Oregon’s 5th Congressional District.
In the 2024 presidential election, Donald Trump defeated Democratic opponent Kamala Harris with 295 electoral votes, earning him a second term as president of the United States.
