Amid continuing violence in Manipur, curfew imposed in Imphal districts till further notice
Manipur: The Manipur police on Sunday enforced a curfew in both Imphal districts till further notice due to the continuing unrest in Manipur. This follows the discovery of six bodies. The Manipur government shut off internet in seven districts after the event.
Because of the current difficult situation here, the authorities have implemented a curfew in Imphal West and Imphal East. The deployment of security officers is accompanied by sparse vehicle movements on the streets. Raj Bhavan and the home of Chief Minister Biren Singh are now more heavily guarded.
In the meanwhile, the current disturbance in Manipur, which has resulted in five fatalities, extensive community relocation, and the destruction of ancestral assets, has deeply alarmed the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC).
“We firmly condemn the violence and implore all stakeholders to give dialogue, reconciliation, and peacebuilding efforts top priority,” the announcement said. In addition to being unstable for the people of Manipur, the present state of affairs seriously jeopardizes the peace and security of the whole Northeastern area.
In order to restore law and order, the committee recommended the Union government to act swiftly and forcefully.
“The NPCC calls upon the Government of India to take immediate and decisive steps to restore Law and Order, address the underlying causes of the conflict, and ensure the safety and dignity of all citizens it is essential to provide adequate support for those affected, including displaced families, and to rebuild trust among the diverse communities present,” the statement continued.
The Manipur people were urged by the NPCC to abstain from violence and cooperate in the pursuit of peace and togetherness.
23, members of the crowd implicated in the alleged “ransacking and arson of the houses,” were taken into custody by Manipur police officers on Sunday.
These people were taken into custody in the state’s Imphal East, Imphal West, and Bishnupur districts. According to the authorities, they also found eight cell phones, seven rounds of SBBL, and one.32 handgun in their possession.
Imphal is under a complete curfew till further notice due to the state’s escalation. The authorities then promptly halted mobile data and Internet services for a period of two days.
Last May 3, skirmishes at a rally organized by the All Tribals Students Union (ATSU) to protest against the demand for the inclusion of the Meitei group in the Scheduled Tribe category caused violence to break out in Manipur.
