Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hopes Trump can end war with Russia ‘soon’
Ukraine: According to Anadolu, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy voiced hope that the administration of US President-elect Donald Trump may hasten the end of the country’s conflict with Russia.
In an interview with public station Suspilne, Zelenskyy made the comments while reflecting on US-Ukraine ties and previous conversations with Trump over the war, which started in 2022.
“He (Trump) has heard the basis on which we stand,” Zelenskyy said, highlighting Ukraine’s connection with Trump’s stance. Nothing opposing our stance has come to my attention.
“We are an independent country,” Zelenskyy said in response to a question about whether Trump had pushed Ukraine to engage in talks with Russia. And we have shown that the “sit and listen” approach is ineffective for us throughout this conflict by having our team and myself engage in talks with the US, Trump, Biden, and European leaders.”
Citing the administration’s commitment to prioritizing a speedy conclusion, the Ukrainian leader expressed his opinion that the war may conclude sooner under Trump’s direction, according to Anadolu.
“We need a fair peace so that we don’t feel that we’ve lost our greatest individuals as a result of the injustice that has been inflicted upon us. There is no set date for when the conflict will conclude. The conflict will undoubtedly conclude sooner under the policy of the people currently in charge of the White House. He went on to say, “This is their strategy, their promise to their people, and it is also very important to them.”
Although his position on ongoing US assistance for Kyiv has been erratic, Trump, who just beat Kamala Harris in the presidential election held on November 5, has previously said that he can end the crisis in a single day, according to Anadolu.
Under the incoming administration, Zelenskyy’s comments suggest cautious optimism about the possibility of greater US involvement in maintaining regional stability.
