Will Putin congratulate Trump?
In a cautious statement after Donald Trump’s resounding win in the 2024 US presidential election, the Kremlin said on Wednesday that the leader’s “actions” in power would demonstrate whether or not he fulfills his “vow” to stop the conflict in Ukraine.
The announcement was made against the background of rumors and worries that Trump’s second term in office would be bad for Georgia. According to AFP, many Russians in Moscow celebrated Trump’s win and hoped he would fulfill his pledge.
Notably, Trump has said time and time again that if elected president of the United States, he would put an end to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Conclusions on certain actions and words
Trump has made some important remarks on the crisis in Ukraine, but it has to be seen whether they will lead to real action, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. “We will draw conclusions based on concrete steps and concrete words,” he said.
According to Peskov, this was about a “unfriendly country” that was fighting a “war against our state” both directly and indirectly.
The Kremlin spokesperson said that ties with Washington were at an all-time low and that he was “not aware” of any intentions by President Vladimir Putin to congratulate Donald Trump on his win.
“We have said time and time again that the United States can help bring this crisis to a close. Although it won’t happen right now, the US may alter the course of its foreign policy. “We will see after (the US presidential inauguration) in January, if this happens, and if so, how,” Reuters cited Peskov as saying.
Following Trump’s announcement of victory, Russia said that its position on Ukraine will not change, regardless of the outcome. It said that accomplishing “all set” objectives in Ukraine would be the top priority for a Republican government in the White House.
According to Russia’s foreign ministry, “Our conditions are unchanged and are well known in Washington.”
Possibility of a positive strategy
Some Moscow officials believe that Trump’s return as US president might pave the way for a diplomatic solution for Kyiv as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues.
According to AFP, Leonid Slutsky, a parliamentary foreign policy official, said, “There may be an opportunity for a positive strategy.”
Notably, the Russian foreign ministry said that it had no illusions about Trump and that the US ruling class had a bipartisan anti-Russian stance in an effort to restrain Russia.
“Russia will work with the new administration when it ‘takes up residence’ in the White House, fiercely defending Russian national interests and focusing on achieving all the set objectives of the special military operation (in Ukraine),” according to a report from the ministry.

Trump’s remarks about Ukraine and Russia
Last month, Donald Trump accused US partner Ukraine of being responsible for Russia’s invasion during his campaign, claiming that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had not fulfilled his obligation to stop the conflict before it began.
Additionally, he attacked President Joe Biden, saying that he was responsible for “instigating” the crisis in Ukraine. He was “clearly talking about Biden” and not Zelenskyy, according to a later statement from the Republican team.
Zelenskyy and Trump had allegedly discussed strategies to end the current conflict with Russia during their September meeting in New York. “We both want to see this end and we both want to see a fair deal made,” Trump had said on Fox News during the interview.
Trump reaffirmed his desire to put an end to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine if elected president of the United States. “We’re going to work very much with both parties to try and get this settled and get it worked out,” Trump said. At some time, it must come to an end. The now-elect president had said at the time, “He’s (Zelenskyy) gone through hell.”
