A fundraising campaign for a 19-year-old Walmart employee who died after being trapped in a walk-in oven has raised over Rs 1 crore

Over Rs 1 crore has been raised for Gursimran Kaur, a 19-year-old Walmart employee who perished while stuck in a walk-in oven at one of the store’s locations in Canada. The Maritime Sikh Society set up a GoFundMe page for Gursimran’s family. Within hours after its inception, the CAD 50,000 (more than Rs 60.78 lakh) campaign was finished. But thanks to the tremendous response, the fundraising effort has almost surpassed its original goal.

Gursimran and her mother were employed at a Walmart shop in Halifax, Canada. According to the GoFundMe page, Gursimran’s mother became concerned and asked the management for assistance on October 19 after failing to locate her on the floor. Regretfully, she found her daughter dead after being burned to death in the walk-in oven of the bakery.

According to a statement from Halifax Regional Police, “the woman, who worked for the store, was found in a large walk-in oven that belonged to the store’s bakery department.”

“It is crucial to remember that the cause and manner of death have not yet been determined by the investigation,” the police said.

We still don’t know the reason or method of death.

Prior to the disaster, Gursimran Kaur and her mother had been employed at the aforementioned Walmart location for two years. Almost three years ago, they moved from India to Canada. The Sikh Society is presently working to assist the family in immigrating “as soon as possible,” since Gursimran’s father and brother have returned to India.

The store where Gursimran works has been temporarily shuttered until the management fully cooperates with an inquiry, a Walmart representative told Fortune.

The local community is devastated by the loss, and local police investigators are asked to keep the community informed of the investigation, Balbir Singh of the Maritime Sikh Society, who has been in communication with Gursimran’s mother, told CBC.
