Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announces cuts in immigration caps for next two years
Ottawa: For the next two years, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has revealed intentions to drastically cut down on immigration.
The goal of this short-term solution is to slow population increase so that the economy can catch up and the system can function properly for all Canadians.
“We’re going to significantly reduce the number of immigrants coming to Canada for the next two years,” Trudeau said in a post he published on. Our population growth will be temporarily halted in order for our economy to catch up. We must ensure that the system functions well for every Canadian.

Immigration Minister Marc Miller and Miller’s parliamentary secretary Paul Chiang joined Trudeau at a press conference on Parliament Hill to unveil this initiative.
In 2025 and 2026, respectively, the revised plan will lower the number of permanent residents entering Canada from 500,000 to 395,000 and 500,000 to 380,000. The Canadian media outlet Cable Public Affairs Channel (CPAC) reports that the government has set a goal of 365,000 permanent residents by 2027.

Immigration Levels Plan Announced
“Today, we announced the 2025-2027 Immigration Levels plan,” said Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, in a post on X on the immigration cutbacks. The prosperity and expansion of our nation’s economy depend on immigration. This strategy would temporarily halt population growth in order to achieve well managed, sustainable growth in response to our nation’s changing demands.
He said in a different article that “a significant decrease in immigration targets will reduce the population and the need to build more homes.”
Notably, Trudeau is coming under increasing pressure from members of his own party, as dissenting Liberal MPs have given him until October 28 to make a decision.

According to Canada-based Global News, Trudeau responded on Thursday by stating that he would continue to lead his Liberal Party into the next election despite calls from two dozen of his MPs for him to resign.
One of the three caucus members who verified signing the paper demanding the prime minister’s resignation was Liberal MP Sean Casey, who called Trudeau’s decision that he will remain leader barely hours after MPs voiced their displeasure “disappointing.”
A paper presenting the case for Trudeau’s resignation was delivered at Wednesday’s caucus meeting, but it made no mention of what would happen if he missed the deadline.
Canadian politician Justin Pierre James Trudeau has led the Liberal Party since 2013 and has been the country’s 23rd prime minister since 2015.
