Three top officials, including principal, of Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital transferred after student protests
As a result of protests by students demanding the resignation of those in charge after the vandalism on August 15, three senior officials at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, including its principal and vice-principal, were transferred by the Bengal government on Wednesday.
The new principal of RG Kar hospital is Manas Bandopadhyay whereas Dr. Surhita Paul has been reassigned to Barasat Medical College and Hospital as a principal. Before this, Bandopadhyay used to be a principal of that hospital and medical college.
After ten days in office as the head of RG Kar, Dr. Paul was moved. This happened because Dr. Sandip Ghosh resigned after a 31 year old intern doctor was raped and killed viciously. On August 12th when Dr. Ghosh quit she was appointed such address.
Dr. Arunabha Datta Chaudhuri who is director at chest medicine department at RG kar medical college/ hospital and Bulbul Mukhopadhyay (medical superintendent –cum-vice-Principal) are also among some others who have been shifted from their earlier posts. The college/hospital has picked Dr.Saptarshi Chatterjee as its new vice principal.

On Wednesday, students as well as resident doctors calling for changes concerning the rape-murder case marched up to Swasthya Bhawan for representation to health department where they demanded that all staff present on the day of vandalism which include Principal & MSVP should be changed. Therefore, Bengali administration led by Mamata Banerjee Chief Minister ordered transfer Surhita Paul et al.
At dawn on August 9th, an intern doctor aged 31 was raped and murdered at RG Kar hospital. Her dead body was found unclothed in the hospital’s lecture theatre and the post mortem showed brutal details of her ordeal. After that occurrence created a huge uproar in the medical fraternity, women took to the streets in protest.
Few days after the rape-murder, a mob attacked the hospital leading to several injuries. The crowd had to be dispersed using tear gas canisters by the authorities. Pictures revealed that it was broken into by people from the mob as well as their breaking of windows of two police cars which were parked near it.
