This amazing fossil specimen was discovered in 1936 by paleontologist Llewellyn Ivor Prince in the Santa Maria Formation in southern Brazil. This find—later named the Staurikosaurus—became essential to our understanding of the evolutionary history of dinosaurs.

The Staurikosaurus existed in the late Triassic era, around 225 million years ago, according to radiocarbon dating methods. This extinct predator got its name from the constellation in which it originated. It was also known as the “Southern Cross Lizard.”
