The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said on Thursday (Oct. 10) that the new station is an expansion of the current Punggol station and would open for passenger service that day at 3 p.m. It will also serve as the NEL’s new terminal station.

Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat wrote on Facebook on Thursday, “Located within the Punggol Digital District, the station will enhance connectivity to existing and upcoming developments, including the JTC Business Park, the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) campus, and Punggol Coast Mall.”

More than 28,000 workers and 12,000 students will reside at the SIT campus and JTC Business Park, respectively.

The station will have two entrances, one along New Punggol Road and the other within the Punggol Digital District. It will be close to the Punggol Coast bus interchange and accessible by foot.

In order to promote sustainable travel, the station will include over 300 bicycle parking spaces. Additionally, green elements like LED lighting and a hybrid cooling system are included.

“With the new station, over 200,000 households will be within a 10-minute walk from a NEL station, with shorter travel time from Punggol North to the city centre and other parts of Singapore,” said the LTA.

“For instance, commuters travelling from Punggol North to Outram Park will take about 45 minutes on the NEL as compared to about 60 minutes currently.”

In August of 2018, SBS Transit took over ownership of the station after construction got underway in 2018.

The NEL’s operator, SBS Transit, has now begun conducting operational testing in order to be ready for the station’s inauguration, according to the LTA.
