Haryana Elections: After Congress’ defeat, BJP sends one kilogram of jalebi to Rahul Gandhi

Haryana Elections: Jalebis for Gandhi Rahul. Jalebis in support of Congress. After a remarkable comeback on Tuesday, the BJP’s Haryana branch sent Congress MP Rahul Gandhi a kilogram of the fried sweet delicacy to his Delhi office in celebration of winning an unprecedented third straight Assembly election. However, the gesture is not one of goodwill or deference to a vanquished opponent.

Rather, it was a triumphant jab at his remark about jalebis from Gohana in Haryana.

“On behalf of all the workers of Bhartiya Janta Party (in) Haryana, jalebis have been sent to Rahul Gandhi’s home,” the party said on X. A screenshot from a food delivery app verifying that Mr. Gandhi had placed an order for sweets and chaat from a Delhi-based business was attached.

The delivery address that appeared was the Congress headquarters, 24 Akbar Road in Delhi.

During his campaign, Mr. Gandhi spoke about how the region’s jalebis are mass produced, marketed, and exported to create jobs and income nationwide.

He said that the center’s Goods and Services Tax, or GST, system had harmed jalebi vendors.

As expected, BJP officials took exception at Mr. Gandhi’s comments, calling him “clueless” about the recipe for the dessert. “I also like Gohana jalebi… but one has to understand how they are made and are sold,” said former law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.

Mr. Gandhi, according to the BJP veteran, “does not do his homework properly.”.

However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also made use of jalebis in a campaign address before the April-June general election, following in the footsteps of Mr. Gandhi.

Using the jalebi, Mr. Modi made an apparent unsupported statement alleging that the opposition INDIA group intended to replace the Prime Minister every year if they were elected.

“Ask them—is the Prime Minister’s post our Matu Ram ki jalebi?” he demanded.

The first gohana jalebis were produced in 1958 and sold by Matu Ram, a local trader. His grandkids now manage his company. “The jalebi weighs about 250 grams each and is made with pure desi ghee. It is crispy yet soft.” Approximately one kilogram of the four pieces weighs ₹ 320, according to one of the grandchildren, Raman Gupta, who spoke to a media report.
