Omar Abdullah reminds PM Modi of his public commitment to restore Jammu and Kashmir

Reminding Prime Minister Narendra Modi of his public commitment to the state’s rehabilitation, National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah on Tuesday repeated his demand for the return of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

“I would like to think Honourable PM has said publicly we will regain independence. Speaking with the media, Abdullah said, “We will only restore if the BJP is elected to power.”

Following the national government headed by Modi abrogating Articles 370 and 35(A), Jammu and Kashmir was downgraded to a Union Territory (UT) in 2019.

Abdullah’s follows the overwhelming success of the National Conference-Congress coalition in the assembly elections. Additionally declaring that his son Omar would be the future Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir was his father, NC president Farooq Abdullah.

Since Article 370 was abolished , 2014 marks the first elections in the former state.

Former J&K chief minister Omar also reassured others that he would visit New Delhi once the new government is set up to demand Home Minister Amit Shah and others to restore statehood.

“Once new government arrives, I anticipated the CM to visit Delhi and meet HM and other leaders, thus stressing to them that mission was to restore statehood. Whoever CM is, I would want him to get along fairly with Indian govt. We have to figure out how to cooperate, he said.

Abdullah defeated his closest PDP competitors by margins of over 10,000 votes and 18,000 votes respectively, therefore securing victories in the Budgam and Ganderbal Assembly seats in Kashmir.

The partnership between the National Conference-Congress won the 90-seat Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections; the coalition secured 48 seats overall. The Election Commission of India (ECI) reports that Congress got six seats while the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) obtained an amazing forty-two seats.

Still, with 29 seats, the BJP became the second biggest party.
