Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: Junior doctors in West Bengal went back to their indefinite “total cease work” on Tuesday amid the continuing demonstrations over the RG Kar rape and murder case. They wanted the state government to fulfill a number of requests, one of which was to guarantee their safety and security at all medical facilities.

On Tuesday, the work stoppage will begin at 10 a.m. The physicians expressed their dissatisfaction with the state administration in a letter to the chief secretary on Monday as well, citing unfulfilled promises.

Days after the junior physicians partly resumed their work at government hospitals after a 42-day strike on September 21, the decision was made. They were engaged in a “cease work” protest in response to the August 9 rape and murder of a female doctor who was working at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Aniket Mahato, one of the infuriated young physicians, was reported by the news agency as stating, “We do not see any positive approach from the state government to fulfil our demands for safety and security.”

He declared, “We are left with no choice other than to opt for full cease work, starting today. It is the 52nd day (of the protest) and we are still being attacked and there is no attempt to keep the other promises made during the meetings with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.”

“This complete cease work will continue until we see clear action from the state government on these demands,” he said.
