President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at expanding access to IVF for Americans
Washington, DC: On Tuesday (local time), President Donald Trump signed an executive order to increase Americans’ access to in vitro fertilization (IVF), with an emphasis on lowering the procedure’s exorbitant costs.
“Today, President Donald J. Trump signed an Executive Order expanding access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) for Americans,” the White House said in a factsheet headlined “President Donald J. Trump Expands Access to IVF.” The order guides policy proposals to aggressively lower out-of-pocket and health plan expenses for IVF procedures while safeguarding access to the procedure. The suggestions will center on ways to guarantee dependable access to IVF.
“Any existing policies, including those that call for legislation, that increase the cost of IVF treatments will also be given priority,” it said. The Order acknowledges the significance of family formation and the need for our country’s public policies to facilitate childbearing for devoted and desirous dads and mothers.
According to the factsheet, IVF procedures may cost anywhere between $12,000 and $25,000 each cycle, and becoming pregnant may need more than one session.
According to statistics from the Department of Health and Human Services, IVF resulted in the birth of over 85,000 babies in 2021. The fertility rate in the US is at yet another all-time low. In 2023, the rate decreased by 3% compared to 2022. The rate steadily dropped by 2% every year between 2014 and 2020, according to the White House factsheet.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, meanwhile, commended the President for signing the executive order to increase access to IVF and stated that it guides policy recommendations to lower out-of-pocket expenses and enhance health plan coverage for individuals pursuing fertility treatments.
