Odisha police decides to reopen Lalit Sahu death case
Jharsuguda: Lalit Sahu, a chef at the home of the late former minister Naba Das, has had his death case reopened by the Odisha Police.

IG Northern Police Range (NR) Sambalpur, Himanshu Lal, said on Friday that the case, which was first declared a suicide, would be reexamined in light of claims made by Sahu’s father, Belalsen Sahu.
According to IG Himanshu Lal, the father of dead Lalit Kumar Sahu, 22, said that his son was employed as a chef and personal assistant at the home of the late former minister Naba Das in Jharsuguda.
Around 7:30 p.m. on April 17, 2022, the young guy was discovered hanging in the servant quarters behind Naba Das’s house.
Police at the time said that Lalit had lost millions of rupees in online gambling and had committed himself as a result of sadness. Suspicions were raised, nonetheless, when his corpse was returned to his hometown in the Dhenkanal area following a hastily performed post-mortem that same evening.
To make matters worse, in December 2022, the viscera that had been saved for forensic investigation to identify the precise cause of death was taken. Suspicions about a potential conspiracy were sparked by the viscera’s theft. Furthermore, the family was not given access to the post-mortem report.
Belalsen Sahu, the father of the deceased, called for a new investigation into his son’s death last month in order to determine the true reason. Police have launched a new inquiry in response to the request.
An Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) would oversee the investigation, while an inspector-rank officer will act as the Investigating Officer (IO), according to IG Himanshu Lal.
“The inquiry officer has been replaced based on the complaint,” IG Himanshu Lal told the media report. I will be overseeing the case alongside an additional superintendent of police, and the investigating officer will be an inspector-rank officer.”
“We will examine the matter and conduct a follow-up investigation. We’ll also see if there were any errors in the case, fix them, and move it forward,” he said.
