Assam Cabinet to meet on February 16 to discuss implications on national security

Guwahati: On February 16, the Assam Cabinet will meet to address the national security ramifications of recent disclosures involving an Assamese MP. This incident coincides with claims made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma that Elizabeth Colbourn, the wife of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, has ties to George Soros’s Open Society and the Pakistani government that might jeopardize national interests.

The state cabinet will meet on February 16 to address the purported connections of an Assamese Congress MP to national security issues, Sarma said Thursday.

He said in an X post that the Assam Cabinet would discuss if the latest disclosures against an Assamese MP have any bearing on national security on February 16. The conversation will center on evaluating the issue completely and honestly, making sure that any required steps are made from a nonpartisan perspective.

Sarma has also questioned the timing of other occurrences, such as a 2015 meeting with the Pakistani High Commissioner to India, that are connected to Gogoi’s political ties and actions. The chief minister of Assam has called on Gogoi and his spouse to provide detailed answers on their purported ties to the ISI and their role in sending young people to the Pakistan High Commission for “brainwashing and radicalization.”

In the meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been “restless” and has “doubts” about his chair, according to Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi of Jorhat.

Assam Chief Minister Sarma has already attacked Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, bringing up his wife’s foreign citizenship and her previous employment in Pakistan.

“We will eventually learn how foreign interests, exemplified by George Soros’ network, impacted a significant 2014 Assam Congress decision. Regarding the claims that linked Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his British wife Elizabeth Colbourn to the Pakistani government and George Soros’ Open Society, Assam Chief Minister Sarma said that the truth will come to light eventually.

He said the pair must respond to serious inquiries about cutting their ties to the ISI and sending susceptible children to the Pakistan High Commission for radicalization and indoctrination.

Sarma also questioned the “timing” of several “events” connected to the political affiliations and acts of the Congress MP.

Sarma said in a post on X that the deputy leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha was not named. “In 2015, the Pakistani High Commissioner to India, Abdul Basit, invited a first-term Member of Parliament (MP) and his startup, Policy for Youth, to discuss India-Pakistan relations at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi,” Sarma said.
