Amid Criticism, Kensington Palace Offers Clarification on Kate Middleton’s Fashion Dilemma
Kensington Palace: Following a recent debate over new palace restrictions, the office of Princess of Wales Kate Middleton released a statement outlining its stance against the publication of specifics about her clothing.
Following a week of discussion on possible modifications to the official ban on revealing details about the princess’s wardrobe preferences, Kensington Palace made its unusual announcement.
“Over the last week, I have received numerous questions regarding a story regarding the Princess of Wales’s clothing and how Kensington Palace shares information about her outfits,” a Kensington Palace representative told PEOPLE earlier on February 11.

The statement went on to say, “To clarify, the comments that appeared in the article were from me, not The Princess of Wales.”
“The Princess of Wales should not be held personally responsible for the alleged remarks. To be clear, our strategy for disseminating details on Her Royal Highness’ attire has not changed,” the statement said.
In the Sunday Times story “Princess of Wales: Focus on my work, not my wardrobe,” published on February 1, an official royal source was quoted as saying, “There is an absolute feeling that [the public work] is not about what the princess is wearing.” Since then, this comment has been made.
“She wants the attention to be on the causes, people, and concerns that are really essential. Some members of the public will always like the princess’s attire, and she receives that. However, is it necessary for us to formally state what she is wearing at all times? No. Although there is some flair, the focus is on the content,” it continued.
Several op-eds in reaction to the article resisted the notion that Kate Middleton’s dress choices should be minimized, supporting British fashion and strengthening her public persona.
Her style, according to critics, is a potent weapon for public engagement and should not be undervalued since it not only honors the legacies of Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth.
