As the day when the seven screens of different colors in the Sabha is gradually withdrawn to reveal the holy light of the lamp placed in the sanctum sanctorum, the Jyothi Darshan is considered an important event by the Samarasa Sutha Sanmarga Sathya Sangam.

As a profound manifestation of devotion, faith, and penance, the Thai Poosam festival honors Lord Murugan, the god of battle, victory, and knowledge. This year, on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, which falls on the Tamil calendar’s Pusam star, Thaipusam will be celebrated on the full moon day in the Tamil month of Thai.

Hindu mythology, including the story of Lord Murugan, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, is where Thaipusam got its start. Legend has it that in order to vanquish the demon Soorapadman and his army, who were wreaking havoc in both the heavens and the earth, Goddess Parvati created Lord Murugan, a strong and courageous warrior.

Goddess Parvati gave Murugan the Vel, a celestial spear that represents strength and justice and is said to be imbued with the energy of the gods, to help him in this quest. With the Vel in hand, Murugan defeated Soorapadman and brought justice and balance back. This significant occasion is commemorated on Thaipusam, the day when Lord Murugan’s mother gave him the Vel to fight the forces of evil.

Thaipusam has deep spiritual significance for believers and is not only a celebration of Lord Murugan’s triumph over evil. The event is seen as a chance to ask for the protection, wisdom, and blessings of Lord Murugan. Introspection, penance, and spiritual purification are also encouraged during this period. The celebration is attended by devotees in remembrance of Lord Murugan’s fortitude, bravery, and commitment to justice. Thaipusam is a potent reminder that in the end, virtue triumphs over evil and that conquering obstacles in life requires selflessness, loyalty, and tenacity. Devotees thank Lord Murugan and reaffirm their dedication to dharma and morality by fasting, praying, and making sacrifices.
