Congress Deputy Leader in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi introduced adjournment motion in the House
New Delhi: Gaurav Gogoi, the Congress’s deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, presented an adjournment motion in the House Thursday to address the US government’s deportation of more than 100 Indian people, which he said was “carried out under conditions that are deeply distressing and humiliating.”
“This House must urgently address the issue to prevent further dehumanization of our people and to uphold the dignity of every Indian, both at home and abroad,” the resolution states.
According to Gogoi’s notice, there have been allegations of these people being chained and subjected to humiliating treatment throughout the deportation process, which raises severe concerns about their rights and human dignity.
He said that while the treatment of our compatriots overseas is the immediate worry, India’s diplomatic stance on human rights is also a larger problem.
“The Indian government’s ongoing quiet, especially the prime minister’s lack of a forceful reaction, has drawn attention both locally and abroad. People believe the government doesn’t care about the rights and dignity of Indian citizens since the prime minister hasn’t spoken on the issue or taken any proactive measures to communicate with the US on it,” Gogoi added.
“The government’s continued silence in the face of such blatant mistreatment is unacceptable and fails to reflect the values of justice, fairness, and compassion that India stands for,” he said.
On Wednesday, a US Air Force aircraft carrying Indian nationals who are suspected of having moved to the US illegally touched down in Amritsar, Punjab.
A representative for the US Embassy said earlier Tuesday that the US is strictly implementing its immigration and border regulations, but that specifics could not be disclosed. According to the spokeswoman, the acts convey a “clear message that illegal migration is not worth the risk.”
“A lot of people have asked me questions on the story of a trip to India for deportation. While I am unable to provide specifics on such requests, I can state that the United States is aggressively policing its borders, strengthening immigration regulations, and expelling undocumented immigrants. A spokeswoman for the US Embassy said, “These actions send a clear message: illegal migration is not worth the risk.”
