Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav held a review meeting of the Jail Department at CM residence Samta Bhawan
Bhopal: At the CM’s house, Samatva Bhavan, in the state capital of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav had a review meeting of the Jail Department and provided the authorities with the required directives.
CM Yadav said at the meeting on Wednesday night that Madhya Pradesh led the nation in giving impoverished inmates financial help for bail and penalties. Economically disadvantaged inmates are eligible to receive up to Rs 25,000 in cash assistance under the program to pay penalties.
According to an official statement, Madhya Pradesh is the only state in the nation to have granted 31 inmates Rs 6,43,517 in penalties and bail so far.
Madhya Pradesh is a state that leads the way in adhering to Section 479 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which requires a jail superintendent to submit a written application for bail to the appropriate court after a prisoner has served half or one-third of their sentence, the chief minister added. It also said that 46 inmates were released as a consequence of the court hearing cases of 78 inmates under this provision.
The Chief Minister praised the accomplishment and commended the Jail Department personnel for the state’s exceptional performance in these two areas. Additionally, he gave authorities instructions to strengthen prison security and expedite efforts to rehabilitate inmates’ moral and intellectual faculties.
During the discussion, authorities also disclosed that all of the state’s prisons are using the E-Prison Management System, which is constantly updating inmate records. Through the Interoperable Criminal Justice System (ICJS), information on more than 131,000 inmates has been uploaded, and the system has so far registered 1,317,303 admissions (including legacy data). The E-Prison system has 48,139 inmates registered since the new criminal rules went into effect on July 1, 2024. Additionally, efforts are being made to expand prisons’ capacity.
Additionally, CM Yadav supported the proposal by authorities to award early release to inmates who exhibit good behavior annually on Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas (November 15), noting that inmates who exhibit good behavior should earn special remission on this day.
Open jails are important because they offer prisoners a feeling of freedom, according to CM Yadav. He oversaw the state’s increase in the number of open prisons, emphasizing that they were to serve as both punishment facilities and hubs for reformation and rehabilitation.
The Chief Minister emphasized the need for prisoner rehabilitation programs that include counseling, yoga, spiritual education, and skill development. These programs will support prisoners’ moral and mental growth and guarantee a smooth transition back into society.
More community engagement in jail reforms was demanded by CM Yadav. He called on specialists and social and religious groups to support rehabilitation initiatives. The state government is dedicated to doing all within its power to guarantee that inmates may live honorable lives upon their release.
