The strike on the Sabreen market and attacks on multiple residential neighborhoods in Omdurman, Khartoum State, have resulted in over 60 fatalities and over 150 injuries, according to a statement released on Sunday by Clementine Nkweta-Salami, the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan.

“These assaults are grave transgressions of both human rights and international humanitarian law. It is imperative that those responsible for these serious offenses face consequences,” said Nkweta-Salami.

“The willful targeting of civilian areas is a flagrant violation of the fundamental rules of the laws of war and human life. Atrocities like this must end right now. “We send our condolences and thoughts to all the families affected,” she continued.

She also expressed regret for the several people killed in assaults that occurred between January 30 and February 1, 2025, in North Darfur and South Darfur states, as well as in Al Obeid and Um Rawaba in North Kordofan State.

The Sudan Health Ministry has said that RPF carried out artillery fire at Sabreen Market, according to Al Jazeera.

The government spokesman and cultural minister, Khalid al-Aleisir, denounced the assault and said that many of the victims were women and children. “This criminal act adds to the bloody record of this militia,” he stated in a statement. “It constitutes a blatant violation of international humanitarian law.”

As a result of the 2021 Army coup, the RPF and the Sudanese army began fighting in April 2023.
