On February 3, 1925, India’s first electric train ran from platform 2 of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (formerly Victoria Terminus) to Kurla in Mumbai. Only 72 years after the first Indian train was introduced on April 16, 1853, the railroads had begun electrifying.

“Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, formerly known as Victoria Terminus, was the destination of the first electric train, which operated to Kurla. This specific train was an initial EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) train. It operated under platform number two and was a fresh, environmentally friendly effort for a long-term shift. The CPRO informed ANI that Central Railway and Indian Railway are now commemorating the completion of this electrification for the hundredth time.

In addition to commemorating the centennial of electricity, Central Railway has achieved 100% electrification.

“In this particular period, Central Railway has completed its 100% electrification also, and for this we are initiating the celebrations, which will be starting from the 3rd of February…” said CPRO.

To commemorate the centennial, a number of activities have been organized, such as a marathon, many lectures, and 3D performances.

“A run in the morning is the first of many scheduled activities. On that day, technical and other seminars will be held at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj terminal, followed by a ceremonial remembrance. After that, we’ll keep planning the other activities that have been scheduled, including the projections and three-dimensional performances,” Nila said while discussing the programs.

In order to teach schoolchildren about the railroads’ history and legacy, the Central railroads have also organized a number of workshops.
