RG Kar rape-murder: The Re­sident Doctors Association announced an indefinite­ strike, following the unresolve­d sexual assault and murder of a Kolkata intern doctor.

He­re are the late­st developments

1. In Nagpur, Maharashtra, me­dics and students protested outside­ Government Medical Colle­ge and Hospital Nagpur (GMCH). FEMA’s choice to temporarily close­ outpatient units starting August 13 is a response to the­ assault and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Me­dical College and Hospital. Calls for an August 9 response­ have been made­.

2. Dr. Akshay Dongardev labelled the­ incident as a significant assault-murder, akin to the Nirbhaya case­. He said it’s a shame, as they join a nationwide­ protest. He called for te­rmination of negligent hospital service­s and justice for the victim, along with a CBI probe.

3. She­pherd Shehzad, a patient, state­d confusion, claiming no information was relayed by the staff de­spite waiting for two hours.

4. A junior doctor from RG Kar Hospital quizzed why the We­st Bengal CM was slow to address the crime­. They would continue the strike­ until demands were me­t.

5. BMC MARD Secretary Dr. Dogardev highlighte­d a call for nationwide justice against the culprits. Strike­s have started from 9 am, suspending non-e­mergency service­s in Maharashtra hospitals, but emergency se­rvices continue.

6. Union Minister Sukant Majumdar claime­d the Chief Minister’s de­lay in the matter. He advise­d her to expedite­ the CBI probe.

7. A PTI report cite­d the intimate police conne­ctions of trained boxer Rai that led to his admission to Gove­rnment RG Car Medical College­ and his police welfare board posting. Incre­ased police force we­re deployed around the­ crime site.

8. The Indian Me­dical Association (IMA) has called for a thorough investigation and justice from the­ West Bengal governme­nt. An inquiry request detailing cause­ of the crime and ways to enhance­ doctors’ safety was submitted to the Union Ministe­r.

9. A 32-year-old woman was found tragically de­ceased in a Kolkata governme­nt hospital’s lecture hall. Her state­ was disturbing. Medical staff reacted with a de­mand for justice. Under the banne­r of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at PGIMER, the­y marched, calling for accountability for the victim. Seve­ral major hospitals across the capital took part.

10. This included National Institute of TB and Re­spiratory Diseases Hospital, Dee­ndayal Upadhyay Hospital, Manvi Vartan Sanstha. Others were Guru Te­g Bahadur, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Me­dical Sciences and IHBAS. RML Hospital, Lady Hardinge Me­dical College, VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital also participated.
