On June 12, 2024, Mohan Charan Majhi took the oath of office as the Chief Minister of Odisha in the first BJP administration. This came following the party’s resounding victory in the assembly elections, which ended the 24-year rule of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD).
The 52-year-old Santali tribal member comes from the Keonjhar area of the state. From 1997 to 2000, Majhi served as a sarpanch. In 2000, he was elected to the state legislature for the first time from Keonjhar. In 2004, he was elected again. He served as the BJD-BJP coalition government’s deputy chief whip from 2005 until 2009. In 2019, he was elected as an MLA once again. Majhi defeated Mina Majhi of the BJD by 11,577 votes in the most recent elections, retaining the seat.
In the Odisha assembly elections, the BJP won 78 out of 147 seats.
